A driving holiday gives you an excellent opportunity to stop exactly whenever you like, and head exactly where it suits you. Whichever route you take, expect a surprise behind the next corner.

However, for some abroad travelers, an ocean is to be cruised first. A boat journey to Norway is a comfortable and pleasant start to the holiday, and makes it of course possible to bring your own car.

Fjord Line takes you directly from Hirtshals in Denmark to Stavanger and Bergen.

Many prefer a shorter ferry crossing, and Color Line offers a high-speed ferry from Hirtshals to Kristiansand. Then a journey over Skagerrak barely takes 3 hours and 15 minutes.

If you are driving a shore in Eastern Norway there are also ferries from Strømstad in Sweden, Copenhagen in Denmark and Kiel in Germany.

Norwegian roads are better than its reputation, but even if tempted - instead of running the shortest path - take a detour along the old, narrow roads. That’s how to find all the hidden beautiful spots. Each detour leads to a hidden gem.

Even though a growing number of bridges and subsea tunnels are being built, it is the smaller domestic ferries that unite Fjord Norway. (For the most popular, you're wise to queue early: Geiranger-Hellesylt, Gudvangen-Kaupanger and Lauvvik-Lysebotn.)
