The hike up to Skålatårnet – the tower at the top of the Mountain Skåla - is a spectacular trip that is considered to be the Norwegian hike with the greatest difference in height from its start at sea level to the top of the mountain.
The tour starts at Tjugen camping close to the Loenvatnet at Loen in
Nordfjord, and goes more or less straight up a marked trail. Expect
about five hours up one of the longest upward slopes of Norway, and
additional three hours back down. For those who like ski touring in the
wintertime; this one is among the best day trips in the fjord area.
From the top you have a view to the Jostedal's glacier in one direction
and Nordfjord in the other. The Skåla Mountain is also the location for the
annual, and not to forget hard, uphill race ”Skåla straight up”. On top
of Skåla is no doubt Norway’s, if not the world's, most curious tourist
cabin, namely Kloumannstårnet. It was the local doctor H. Kloumann from
the small village of Innvik who first had the idea for this lofty
cabin. From his home on Faleide he had a beautiful view over the fjord
with the dominant Skåla in the background. To make the mountain more
accessible he had a large stone tower built in 1891. Inside the tower
there are three floor bunk beds with room for 18 spectacular views in
all directions. The night visit to the toilet makes an unforgettable
experience.
