West of the Jotunheimen and slightly north of Sogndal you find Mørkridsdalen and Breheimen. Be it day trips or hiking for several days, this is a good starting point for many great trips.
You may experience real winter conditions on the peaks and glaciers,
spring and summer in the hillsides and summer down in the valleys. If
you like hiking in hilly terrain here are some suggestions for tours
starting in the green and magic Mørkridsdalen.
Take of highway 55 (RV 55) at Skjolden and head north to the parking
lot at Hyrnavollen in Mørkridsdalen. The first leg goes across the
beautiful landscape along the river and some lakes, before the rise and
a marked path to the cabin Arentzbu. This is one of Norway’s most
flora-rich routes. The next day you can proceed on to the cabin of
Nørstedalseter and later over to Stølsdalen (meaning something like:
“mountain farm valley”) and down to Turtagrø or Fortun. An alternative
route for the first day is to head up past the spectacular waterfall
Drivandefossen and on to Osen and Åsetevatnet. This variant gives a
spectacular view over Mørkridsdalen and the first stage ends in the
self-catering cabin Fast. The next day, you may continue to Arentzbu
and continue the suggested route over. This entire mountain region has
available cabins galore. If you want to see more of glaciers it may be
a good alternative to walk north out of Arentzbu and over to
Sprongdalshytta where you can find a wonderful view to the
Jostedalsbreen. The whole area has a number of cultural and historical
clues that makes it particularly interesting to visit these parts.
Enjoy your trip!
