The Grieg Trail

Edvard Grieg found inspiration for some of his most important compositions in the western parts of Jotunheimen, the innermost parts of the Sogne Fjord. One of his most beloved trekking routes start at the Hotel Turtagrø, where you also have a good starting point for various tours in the national parks Breheimen and Jotunheimen.

The young Edvard Grieg at age 15 received new impulses affecting his artistic path when he in 1858 came up in the mountains. Several of his best works, such as the stunning piano concerto in A minor and the music of Peer Gynt, is heavily influenced by his feeling of unity with the Norwegian nature and the mountains. It was particularly in the western parts of Jotunheimen Grieg thrived. In 1891 he set out from Turtagrø with two of his best for his most famous hike. They walked over the mountains and down to Årdal in great sunny weather. Despite his weak lungs, he went almost to the top of the northern Dyrhaugstind. The next day they continued on foot and horseback through the Kaiser-suited to Skogadalsbøen, ending at Vetti after walking over “Friken”. Moved by the trip he wrote afterwards: "The summer was a unique and beautiful. The Jotunheimen incomparable; we all came back 10 years younger"

This tour starts at Turtagrø, goes over the Dyrhaug ridge, Keiseren (the Emperor), Skogadalsbøen and Vetti before ending in Årdal.
