The European winter is hereby declared open! The 9th of October Røldal Ski Resport groomed the cross country slopes. A few more days of snow, and the lifts will open as well.
So far 12 km of slope is groomed, both for classic and skating in Røldal Ski Centre. All natural snow, and the conditions are perfect. Just a few months after the peak summer season, winter can be found in the mountains.
"Conditions are really considering the time of year. A solid base of 20 cm in the low sections. The upper 6 km section of the Cross Country trail we see full winter conditions, says travel manager in Odda municipality, Pelle Gangeskar.
The alpine slope and the lifts will open as soon as they get a few more snowdays, but the most enthusiastic skiers have already been seen ski touring in the area.
"I wouldn't recommend to use a brand new pair of favourite skis for downhill powderskiing as the base of snow is still thin. But this is a very early start, even for Røldal, says Pelle Gangeskar.
