Over the last 15 years the activity of ascending mountains by alpine skis (or telemark) in winter has become an increasingly popular activity for Norwegian Skiers. There are a number of guidebooks that have been published, and Fjord Norway is considered one of Europes best areas for this activity, along with Northern Norway. Actually, what is considered to be the worlds biggest Alpine Ski Touring Festival is being held every year in early May, on Turtagrø Hotel in the mountains of Hurrungane in the inner Sognefjord.
One of the special characteristics of Norway is the strict laws against heliskiing and snowmobiles, so the silence and untracked mountains are only there for those who put skins under their skis and make their way to the summit.
To go ski touring, you need Alpine Touring (AT) or randonnée equipment is specifically designed for ski touring in steep terrain. Telemark skis or splitboards (a special form of snowboard that can be split into two skis) can also be used. A special Alpine touring binding
is used that allows the heel to be clipped down for more support when
skiing downhill, and allows it to be released to swing resistance-free
from the toe when climbing.
