The mountains surrounding
Åndalsnes, Isfjorden and Sunndalsøra is considered to be among the best
ski touring areas in Europe, offering steep mountains, great views and
long downhill runs.

Especially in and around the Isfjord, Åndalsnes and Sunndalsøra there are many nice mountains. This region is further east than the other
mountains of the region, and the weather can be better here than in the
Sunnmøre area. The ski season usually lasts from early December to the summer. It is easy to get to Romsdal; there are buses from Trondheim and the Rauma railway corresponds with the train between Trondheim and Oslo.
Galåtind (1124 m)
This is an easy and relatively short tour. Go from the Isfjord through Grøvdalen and take left towards Måsvassbu. Follow the marked trail towards Kavlisetra and continue up to the top. Go down the same way.
Kirketaket (1439 m)
One of the mountains, the Kirketaket, is so popular that it actually has its own website,
www.kirketaket.com. It has quite a spectacular profile, and 1000 metres of great downhill - sometimes it is even possible to ski all the way down to the fjord! The trip normally takes 3-5 hours.
Fløtatinden (1711 m)
Fløtatinden is one of several classic alpine ski touring trips in the region. It has over 1500 vertical meters of great skiing, is easy to access and has an amazing view to Trollheimen and Trollveggen. The trip takes 4-7 hours.
If your base is Åndalsnes, you should note the book "Toppturer i Romsdalen" (Alpine Ski Touring in Romsdalen), that is awarded the best
outdoor guidebook in Norway. It is written by the local mountain guide Halvor
Hagen, in Norwegian but with an english summary and very visual
illustrations on routes and difficulty levels. A perfect planning tool! The
book includes a special ski map of the region in 1:50 000. The book may be
ordered from www.eksponert.no or bought
locally, in sports or book stores.
