Kayak-guide to Fjord Norway

Whether you prefer quiet paddling in a massive fjord areas or to paddle in the unique archipelago of the west country - the west coast is a kayaking mecca of international caliber.

Several areas seem almost specifically designed for kayakers. There are narrow, shallow straits where few boats dare to go- and the myriad of islands reefs and islets that make navigation difficult, but fun. The easy availability of key junctions on the west coast makes the area particularly well suited for weekend trips, short holidays or mini-expeditions.

Micro-terrain, or small structures that contribute to the landscape so that it changes almost for every stroke, is one of the secrets of a good paddling area. Many islands and reefs makes the trip full of surprises, and paddling is more fun. These are sheltered embayments, perfect camp sites, abundant wildlife - and bad weather can often be neutralized by that there is an opportunity to sneak on the inshore if the sea becomes too rough.

Do not miss the list of the best padling spots below!

Where the great Sognefjord widens out, the edge of the sea, on the north side, you will find a distinctive island landscape - dominated by rock conglomerate. A great place for those who like to paddle kayaks.

Paddle Spot: Bulandet

"Do not look back" it says on a sign as you drive from the ferry to Værlandet. The islands of Bulandet is an area which offers fantastic adventures for kayakers, especially those who want to try out a little surf and large waves in safe but exotic surroundings.

Paddle Spot: Smøla roundtrip

Just north of Møre og Romsdal county, on the border to Sør-Trøndelag, is the island Smøla. A glance at the map reveals that the island is surrounded by an archipelago all the way - with the small islands that protect you from the ocean and makes it possible to paddle around the island without being exposed to much to powerful sea.
