Gulen municipality boasts about 1,500 islands, islets and reefs within the municipal boundaries. They provide great experiences for kayakers!
The area seperates Sognefjord in the north and Fensfjorden in the south, and is a easy destination to get to from Bergen. Especially the western part of the municipality is suitable for kayakers - not at least because of the distinctive, narrow straits that are often too shallow for regular boats. Many of them can only be paddled at high tide, and tidal currents can be a
challenge at times.
In this area Byrknesøy is the largest and most famous island, but it is flanked by places like Mjømna, Hiserøy, Hille and Kvernøya. As far northwest as you can go, towards Sognesjøen (Sogn Lake), there is an little island-paradise with small bays, narrow straits and chanels.
There are two daily departures by express boat from Bergen to Mjømna (www.fjord1.no/en/). If you come by car you drive via Leirvåg at Mongstad and take the ferry to Skipavik (www.tide.no - only in Norwegian). If you want a roof over your head the best option would be Byrknesøy Svanholmbua holidays. Otherwise it is a lot of space if you want to set up tent, with five-star view!
