Just north of Møre og Romsdal county, on the border to Sør-Trøndelag, is the island Smøla. A glance at the map reveals that the island is surrounded by an archipelago all the way - with the small islands that protect you from the ocean and makes it possible to paddle around the island without being exposed to much to powerful sea.
The main island is about 214 square kilometers, and is almost circular and flat - no higher than 74 meters at its highest. For general boat traffic, the area is a nightmare - it is said that Smøla have more cutting than the Trøndelag counties combined. For the paddler, this is a dream landscape: You will find lots of fish, fantastic bird life and little boat traffic. The paddle trip around the island is about 80 kilometers long and is a perfect trip for a long weekend and deserves the "classic" label among paddlers!
There are express boats from Kristiansund to Edøy by Smøla. Check timetables on www.kystekspressen.no (in Norwegian). If you arrive by car Smøla is accessible by ferry from Sandvika on the neighboring island Tustna (closest to Kristiansund) and Forsnes on Hitra (closest to Trondheim), timetables on www.fjord1.no.
