Staying at a youth or family hostel is a unique way of getting to know
other travellers. And it is less expensive, so more of your money can be
spent experiencing other things.
The informal atmosphere and the people that choose this form of
accommodation adds an extra value. At a family/youth hostel, you will
meet people whose goals in life go beyond rooms with gold taps and
expensive dinners. People of all ages and from many nations. Alone, in
groups or together with family. And it is not like an ordinary hotel,
where guests barely meet in the reception. At hostels, you can share
tables and make friends. Perhaps for life?
At the beginning of last century, the German teacher Richard
Schirmann was interested in taking his students on trips so they could
be exposed to new places and impulses. In 1909, he had the idea of using
schools that stood empty during the summer and at weekends, thus
creating the “youth hostel”. Today, there are more than 4,000 hostels in
89 countries across the globe. In 2008, family/youth hostels had
approximately 38 million overnight stays.
The time when hostels were exclusively schools with large dormitories
is past. Hotel chains are keen to boast that their rooms maintain the
same standard no matter where you are in the world. Not so with us.
Every hostel has a unique history and origin, and the hosts often set
their own stamp on the place, too.
Today’s family/youth hostel has everything from single rooms to
doubles and family rooms – and many include showers and WCs. If you wish
to prepare your own meals, our hostels have good quality, modern
kitchen facilities for guests. Most have internet access, good laundry
facilities and, not least, pleasant lounges. Even though the physical
standard of hostels in Norway has improved a lot over the years, we are
continuously trying to preserve – and develop – the uniqueness of
staying at a hostel.
In Fjord Norway you will find more than 25 hostels – each one
different in design and size, but all are located near Fjord Norway's
