Due to the oil industry Stavanger is one of Scandinavia´s most cosmopolitan cities. Stavanger´s history dates back to the Viking age, and its fortune has largely been built on fishing, canning industry, ship building, and more recently, oil. Old Stavanger is an archaeological masterpiece with wooden buildings from the 18th and 19th century. We can suggest sights such as Stavanger Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in Norway, dating back to 1125, or perhaps the re-constructed iron-age farm “Jernaldergården” at “Ullandshaug”. If you fancy a trip to the museum, the “Museum of Archaeology” is a popular destination.
