Alva is told that she has cervical cancer and that she needs surgery, but that everything will be fine.
Alva is terrified; as a specialist nurse in anaesthesia and surgery, she knows a great deal about what the procedure involves.
Far too much.
Long-term pain conditions, lymphoedema and postoperative infections can all occur following surgery.
And what about the doctors and nurses she meets? Are they having a good day? Have they had no arguments at home? Have they slept well?
Do they seem a little burnt out?
We cannot completely trust her judgement.
Alva and I have the same background. We are both specialist nurses.
I worked for more than 40 years in the surgical and anaesthesia departments at Stavanger University Hospital (SUS), and in recent years at the pain clinic.
Glassmaneter is my fifth book.
In his review in Stavanger Aftenblad, Tarald Aano writes:
“A beautiful little novel about big things and ordinary lives.”
There are humorous undertones throughout the text. The book is light and bright, while also leaving room for reflection.
