Beiggja is the result of a spontaneous musical collaboration that began in the winter of 2024 and was captured on the group’s debut album, Morning, released on 13 June by Hubro. Since its release, the album has received widespread acclaim. Dag og Tid described the album as “balm for the soul”. Major publications including Bandcamp, Jazzwise, Jazz'Halo and Mezzo placed the album on their monthly lists of the best jazz albums. French outlets France Musique and Culture Jazz described the music as “highly recommended” and “an album offering an embarrassment of riches from first to last”.

The music invites listeners into a space where musical curiosity and trust in an open, spontaneous interplay drive the music forward. Sprangers’ lyrical intensity and Mulelid’s melodic vision are firmly anchored by Eilertsen’s rich tone and Johansen’s consistently creative drumming. The result is a collection of melodic pieces shaped by spontaneity, curiosity and an unmistakable Nordic clarity.

The band consists of Dutch saxophonist Kika Sprangers and three well-known Norwegian musicians: pianist Kjetil Mulelid, bassist Mats Eilertsen and drummer Per Oddvar Johansen.

Beiggja began with a desire to play, explore and create acoustic jazz. Each musician brought compositions and ideas to the first meeting, but what truly defined the recording was the freedom to let the music develop naturally. “No take was the same,” the group explains. “The interplay was fantastic – it felt completely natural and organic.”

This sense of trust and openness lies at the heart of Beiggja’s music, where every note carries a sense of intention without losing the lightness of improvisation.

In June 2025, Beiggja brought the music to the stage for the first time, with three concerts in the Netherlands confirming the group’s magnetic appeal beyond the studio. The band played to full houses at the legendary Bimhuis in Amsterdam, TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht and at the acclaimed Jazz in Duketown festival in Den Bosch.

Following the Bimhuis concert, legendary music enthusiast Henning Bolte described the experience as: “Light, space, sound – a leaning towards the Nordic, the breadth of the room, and a devoted drive into melancholy – a transcendent experience.”
