Bigbang at Hvelvet Scene
The classic trio
It is easy to forget that Bigbang are a trio – everything heard and seen on stage is created by just three musicians. Where most rock bands need four or five members to fill out the sound, the classic trio relies on musical skill, dynamics and the ability to fill several roles at once.
Bass, drums and guitar make up one of the most demanding, but also most stripped-back, band formats. When the chemistry works, the result can be magical. Cream, Nirvana and The Jimi Hendrix Experience are classic examples. Bigbang carry on that tradition with a distinctive and powerful sound.
The line-up that defined the band
Olaf Olsen, Nikolai Hængsle and Øystein Greni form the line-up that has come to define Bigbang.
Olaf Olsen is instantly recognisable behind the drum kit and a highly sought-after contributor to a wide range of musical projects. Outside Bigbang, Olsen is one of two brothers involved in Todd Terje's band project.
Nikolai Hængsle is an exceptional bassist as well as an active music producer. Hængsle is a permanent member of Elephant9 and a key part of the critically acclaimed project Band of Gold.
Øystein Greni is the band's vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and unmistakable frontman. Greni is the only constant member since the band's formation. Music has been part of Greni's life from an early age, with band rehearsals taking place even before speech had developed.
Music and releases
Bigbang's most recent release arrived in 2023 with the album Le Californie. Tracks such as «Dogtown Boys», «She's All Right» and the melancholic gem «Another Kind of Lonely» have since become firm live favourites.
The timing of new releases from the Oslo trio remains unknown. New musical ideas and recordings, however, are continually being developed in Øystein Greni's studio.
