In 1886, Arne Garborg published the novel Mannfolk. The book aroused strong feelings and caused Garborg to lose his position as state auditor in Kristiania.
In this lecture, the book is used as the basis for a kind of environmental analysis of the demands placed on immigrants in Kristiania and why truth becomes impossible and love becomes betrayal.
