Brosundet Brenner is a powerful and atmospheric tradition commemorating the great fire of 1904 and the city that rose from the ashes.
On 23 January, the Brosundet canal is transformed with sound, light, film, and storytelling, bringing to life the dramatic night in 1904 when much of the city was destroyed by fire. The city itself becomes a canvas – a place where families gather and Ålesund’s story is shared with the next generation.
In 2025, sign language interpretation was introduced for the first time, and we hope to continue making the event accessible so that everyone who wishes can take part in this experience in 2026 as well.
Together with other events, Brosundet Brenner forms part of a diverse cultural programme connected to Ålesund’s Historical Days, taking place from 22–25 January.
