The word "Chrysalis" refers to the pupal stage of a butterfly—the phase before something new emerges. Both the band's name and its music play on this very concept: breaking free from something. The music embodies a duality, traversing both the hard and rugged and the fragile and atmospheric. The compositions, penned by saxophonist Eivind Urnes Berg, are rooted in the modern jazz tradition while remaining attentive to the energetic playing style of the 1950s. With a lineup that omits chordal instruments, the musicians are liberated to focus on melody—both in improvisation and within the songs' written themes. The band aims to perform original material using an egalitarian approach, where all members alternate between providing accompaniment and taking on the role of soloist.
Lineup:
Eivind Urnes Berg – saxophone, compositions
Zacharias Ellingsen – trumpet
Erlend Kongshaug – double bass
Ole Calmeyer – drums
