Zum Hauptinhalt

The world is unsettled today, with wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, but these conflicts do not directly affect us today. However, not so long ago, Europe was caught up in what became known as the Cold War, which lasted from 1948 to 1990.

The Soviet Union and its satellite states were locked in a tense stand-off with Europe and the USA. This led to a massive military build-up, including at Sola Airport.

In the early 1950s, Sola was the only operational airport in southern Norway. As a result, many aircraft were stationed there or passed through the airport. Never before had so many Allied soldiers been stationed in the area.

There was a great deal of secret political activity surrounding this period, but what actually happened at Sola?

Sondre B. Hvam from the Aviation Museum will tell the story of Sola during the Cold War, followed by some reflections on “Could it happen again?”
