Zum Hauptinhalt

Jakob Sande, a farm boy from Dale in Sunnfjord born in 1906, distinguished himself early on as a prodigy with many talents. His background—rooted in an environment of stark social disparities and contrasts—provided a rich foundation for his poetry and literary life. The radical circles in his local community, an upbringing in an open, culture-loving home, and storytelling traditions shared by both his family and local Traveller communities all supplied a wealth of ideas for the observant Sande. Nature and natural imagery in his writing often serve as metaphors for the human journey through life.

His poetry revolves around several themes, such as the landscape of Western Norway, the life of a sailor, and rural existence. It also addresses social issues and classic themes like love and death. The poems range from the grotesque humor found in "Kallen og katten" and "Likfunn" to sentimental, emotionally charged pieces like "Fløytelåt" and "Vesle Daniel." You can experience examples of this in our performance.
