One of world literature’s most gripping stories, famous as a musical, is in this version stripped of music and presented in raw theatre form. The production has already premiered in Denmark, receiving glowing reviews and winning the prestigious Reumert Award for Ensemble of the Year.
In director Kjersti Horn’s signature style, the performance is staged as a single long take, with the audience seeing the actors up close via a large screen covering much of the stage. Les Misérables becomes an epic about striving to be a good person at any cost. It is radical storytelling, exposed theatre play, and a reminder from another era to hold on to what has always been most important: humanity.
Les Misérables tells the story of the convict Jean Valjean, who steals a loaf of bread for a starving sister and her children and must pay for it for the rest of his life. It is the story of a man with no chance in a system that blindly follows rules, even when they are unjust. The action spans over 17 years, from 1815 and culminates in 1832 with the French June Rebellion.
This production of LES MISÉRABLES was originally produced by Det Norske Teatret and Betty Nansen Teatret in Denmark.
The Stavanger production is produced in collaboration with Det Norske Teatret.
