Snakk! – 10 years of taking stock: How is Bryne’s intellectual and cultural life?
Snakk! marks its 10th anniversary by taking stock. How healthy is the intellectual and cultural life of Bryne?
With Bryne town centre as our starting point, we hope to explore the development of both the town and its cultural life. This year marks 25 years since Bryne was granted town status. Snakk! was established 15 years later. There was a venue at Mellombels, a cultural beer house that opened on the town square that same year. But the square had hardly been known as a place for cultural events and refined beer drinking before then. So what has changed?
Town status can be granted by a decision. A thriving cultural and intellectual life has to be created. Welcome to an evening combining self-examination, nostalgia and celebration. We have invited a group of people who have been closely involved with Bryne to consider two questions: When did Bryne become civilised? And does its cultural and intellectual life live up to its status as a town?
Åse Skrudland and Ørjan Zazzera Johansen both grew up in Bryne and are now involved in the established cultural scene in Jæren. Kjell Olav Stangeland, also from Bryne, is a member of the municipal council for the Labour Party in Time and author of Frå utmark til by – historia om Bryne (From Outlying Land to Town – The History of Bryne, 2021). Arne Håland was a police officer in Bryne during the 1980s and 1990s, working among other things on crime mapping and prevention. Bjørn Hagerup Røken opened Mellombels beer house on the town square in 2016. Since then, he has been involved in several start-ups, including Hemmeleg and Rits café and wine bar.
The event is organised in collaboration with Mellombels beer house and is supported by Time Municipality.

About Snakk!
Snakk! was founded in 2016 by Kristine Stensland, Helene Nord-Varhaug, Serina Fuglestad, Ove Martin Mellemstrand, Ørjan Zazzera Johansen and Bjørn Hagerup Røken. Its aim was to be a non-political association contributing to the intellectual and cultural life of Jæren through informative, entertaining and engaging events – and, where appropriate, provocative ones too.
