Rock poet Tom Roger Aadland performs a solo concert at Sola Ruinkyrkje on Thursday 22 October, featuring songs by Aadland and Dylan.
His latest album, Lysvandring, has received outstanding reviews. Music blog The Wilhelmsens calls the album “a masterpiece”, adding: “It has been a long time since I have heard such a complete and superb album.” Music magazine Puls believes that “Aadland pushes boundaries with this album”.
“Tom Roger Aadland is a Norwegian musical treasure who should be known to everyone,” wrote hi-fi magazine Stereo+ when the album Skyer was released. “At times, he can resemble a Norwegian Cohen, balancing everyday life and mythology, Jokke and Homer,” wrote Klassekampen about Motgift, released a couple of years earlier. Dagsavisen stated that “it would have been fitting for Bob Dylan to record these songs in English”. Aadland’s lyrics were recently published as a book in the collection Alle dei i ei – Songlyrikk 1999–2024, published by Fonna Forlag.
As a songwriter, Tom Roger Aadland is distinguished by a particular ability to combine powerful lyrics with memorable melodies. Several of his songs have become radio favourites, and many will recognise tracks such as “Alle dei i ei”, “Like til mi dør” and “Min beste ven på ein dårleg dag”. Aadland is also known as a lyricist for, among others, Hellbillies, Vamp, Marion Ravn and Trygve Skaug.
His Norwegian interpretations of Dylan’s songs have resonated with many audiences. When the new Bishop of Stavanger was consecrated, Dylan performed by Aadland was her musical request, with His Majesty the King among those in attendance. Aadland was also one of the selected artists for an NRK-televised concert marking Dylan’s eightieth birthday.
Tom Roger Aadland is still on the road – and still moving forward. He is known as an energetic performer with a special ability to convey the meaning and emotion of a song, and has a reputation for always delivering on stage.
