On Tuesday 6 October, Tor Inge Vormedal will give a talk on the 1970s, a decade that left a clear mark on social life, culture and economic development in the region.
Culture, engagement and new trends
The 1970s were a period of intense public debate and increased engagement. Song festivals, gymnastics festivals, women’s liberation and the EEC campaign characterised the era, whilst environmental issues also came firmly onto the agenda.
Key milestones in Haugalandet
Among the major events in the region was the opening of Haugesund Airport, Karmøy, in 1975. At the same time, Haugalandet underwent significant changes that affected both everyday life and future prospects.
The shipping crisis and the business sector
The decade was also marked by challenges for the business sector. The shipping crisis had major consequences for the region, and several shipping companies and shipyards were forced to close during a difficult period for the maritime industry.
