When Munch Became Munch by Holger Koefoed – September 25 at 6:00 PM

The year is 1885, a groundbreaking year in Edvard Munch’s career. He is 22 years old and meets one of Kristiania’s most beautiful women, leading to an erotic relationship. In his diaries, he refers to her as Mrs. Heiberg. After their intense encounters in Borreskogen that summer, Munch is inspired to create many of his iconic works such as The Scream, Madonna, The Kiss, and more. The relationship ends in jealousy and despair, and we follow the events through Munch’s own texts and images.

That same autumn, he begins work on his first major piece, The Sick Child, which becomes crucial for his development as an artist following his breakdown in 1907. We follow the creation of this work through his own writings and the observations of his friend Hans Jæger, leader of the Kristiania bohemians, who accompanied Munch’s struggle with the theme throughout that fall. The Sick Child depicts the death of his sister Sophie, a subject and motif without precedent. This lecture will provide a dramatic insight into a young artist navigating his way through many trials to become the Edvard Munch we know.

Five Things That Changed Art History Forever by Art Historian Silje Sigurdsen – October 16 at 6:00 PM

To understand contemporary art, it helps to have a fundamental knowledge of art history and an insight into how art has evolved. However, not everyone has the time, money, or interest to study art history in depth. Therefore, I wanted to create this lecture. The aim is to present art and art historical knowledge in a simple and clear manner. We will get to the point using language that most people can understand. The lecture will cover the five most significant breakthroughs in art that have influenced the development of Western art history the most. It will provide insight into how art history has developed and is perfect for those who want to learn more about art, live with art, participate in art discussions, and make more informed decisions when buying art. Silje Sigurdsen's special areas include visual culture, visual rhetoric, and media development. She has had a multi-year involvement with the Tangen Collection and Kunstsilo.

Strong and Important - About the Venice Biennale 2024 by Trond Borgen – November 13 at 6:00 PM

This year’s Venice Biennale is not only artistically strong but also important. There is a clear shift in focus away from Western contemporary art towards art from other parts of the world. We saw this trend already at the Documenta exhibition in Kassel two years ago, and it is being further reinforced and clarified here: the West is losing its hegemony in visual art.

In his lecture, Trond Borgen will examine this trend in detail; he will also showcase some of the great diversity at the biennale and present several highlights from this year’s event. It is beautiful, provocative, and thought-provoking.
