The cult film Fucking Åmål by Lukas Moodysson captivated an entire generation when it premiered in cinemas in 1998. It has been called the best film ever made in Sweden, has won countless awards and was Sweden's Oscar entry. Now the story is being revived in Teaterhallen. It is of course the Youth Theatre, with the director himself - Bjørn Ravn Carlsen - directing, that will take you to the small town in Västra Götaland County.
Nothing is happening in the claustrophobic small town of Åmål, aka the stop of prejudice. The young people hang out at the kiosk, smoke and drink too much at parties. They're bored and looking for something to do. There are rumours of raves and drugs, but absolutely nothing happens.
Agnes and Elin live in ‘fucking’ Åmål. They go to the same school, but are two very different girls. Even though Agnes has lived in the town for almost two years, she still has no friends. She's hopelessly in love with Elin, the most popular girl in school, but she doesn't dare admit it because she's afraid of being bullied.
Rumour has it that Elin has slept with almost all the boys in Åmål, but it's not true. The rumours bounce off her like water off a duck's back, and she comes across as fearless, restless and infatuated with everything that reflects big city youth.
