Impressive snowclad mountain peaks frame the picturesque views – the same mountains that provide protection for the small areas that have fertile soil. With plenty of help from the fjords’ reflection of the sun, they create unique microclimates that make the cosy villages perfect for fruit cultivation, especially apples and cherries. Don't forget to taste the result of last year's blossoming - local farm shops will serve you tasty Eplemost (pure apple juice) and cider from loacal producers.
See the waterfalls at their mightiest
Witness how the dramatic Norwegian waterfalls roar to life in spring. May and June is the absolute best time to see them come to life, when the ice and snow melt away and join the cascades of water that already plunge down the mountainsides. In the Sognefjord you can visit Vettisfossen in Utladalen which was named Norway's most beautiful waterfall and is Norway's highest free waterfall with its 275 meters. One of the greatest things about spring is to witness how nature sheds its winter coat and becomes fresh and green. Not to mention the bliss of longer and warmer days, combined with the intensely happy songbirds. Several activity companies offer a guided RIB tour where you can experience the impressive Sognefjord in spring costume and look for seals, porpoises or eagles. Or what about Fjord Cruise on UNESCO Nærøyfjord which gives you a memory for life?
First swim of the year
Are you a real Viking? Prove it by taking at least a few bold strokes in the cold spring water. The earlier, the better, but for the standard Viking, it’s acceptable to start throwing oneself in around 1 May. The Sognefjord offers several beautiful bathing spots with a pier and diving tower. It's going to be cold!
“Vårskiturer”, or spring skiing, is very popular. In certain mountain areas, there is usually plenty of soft and untouched snow as late as in April and May. Sognefjorden has several activity companies with experienced guides who can take you to the best snow. NB! Remember sunscreen and sunglasses as it can be hot in the month of May in the mountains where you can throw on your jacket and enjoy spring. The ski resorts Sogn Skisenter and Sogndal Skisenter are also open at the end of April where the queues are smaller and the conditions on the slopes are fantastic for both young and old.
