Balestrand Taxi offers taxi tour or you can rent a car to the new viewpoint "Utsikten", part of the National Tourist Route Gaularfjellet, 703 meters above sea level.
The journey lasts 40 minutes and is 37 km distant from the centre of Balestrand. The road to Gaularfjell is one of the designated national tourist routes of Norway. It passes along some of the branches of Sognefjorden and passes small farms and beautiful natural scenery. Then the road gets quite curvy climbing up the mountain side through nine sharp bends before you get to the top and the viewpoint.
The viewpoint is built by the Norwegian Road Administration and designed by Code architects after a competition. The idea is to make the viewpoint appear as a clear shape in the landscape and provide a spectacular sight. Before its completion, the viewpoint has already got international attention.
The structure is a triangular concrete surface, with corners pointing towards north, south and west. Each corner is shaped specificly in relation to the landscape. You have to combat any fear of heights, but the effort is certainly worth it. The viewpoint's surface is 420 square metres. It looks like an unfolded blanket for a picnic. So sit down, relax and enjoy the view.
You'll be surrounded by 1500 m high mountains. It is also fascinating to see other vehicles down there doing the same climb as you. Come and drive with us. It would be a memorable trip combining beautiful mountain and fjord scenery, the art of old road engineering and modern architecture.
