The sea did not stop when it reached land. It continued to drift into my unconsciousness. From the desolate beach of driftwood and discarded rubble, I walked into a long corridor on the ocean floor. The walls were filled with strange looking plants in all kinds of colors, shapes and sizes. Corals and sponges were curiously peeking out from their hideaways. Long strands of seaweed hovered above my head and seemed to be watching my every move. Like a sailor who has just reached shore, I continued my drunken walk. Outside, organized sets of microscopic particles were floating back and forth with the shifting tide.

Andreas Siqueland - Corals, Sponges and Evil Seaweed - Painting / Textile Pressure

In Corals, Sponges and Evil Seaweed, the audience is invited into an exhibition where paintings and canvas prints form the walls of the exhibition. Mounted in the new barn, the installation follows the pillar in the middle of the room. This creates a room in the room that envelops us.

The paintings we enter into are an underwater world that contains corals, mushrooms and kelp. On the outside, we see another type of seabed made up of floating organic and inorganic elements, sedimented in pattern and layer-by-imprint. Siqueland is concerned with how the paintings interact with the body and the bodily, how we as a viewer take place in the world we see. But how do we put ourselves into a world we cannot see? Siqueland has resolved this by converting the subconscious into a physical space that we can enter. The painting acts as a "deputy" - something that is authorised to make this invisible world visible.
