The Stavanger Chamber Music Festival is delighted to welcome once again a festival packed with fabulous musicians from Norway and abroad in 25 concerts.

This year's chamber music festival in Stavanger

There will be big concerts, intimate concerts, family performances, a whirlwind pub crawl and expert talks.

Composers in exile is the theme of this year's chamber music festival

This year, the festival will focus on composers in exile. There's something heavy and despondent about exile, and is it something we need more of now? The answer is simple: No. So that's why we're going to focus mainly on happy exile. Handel's life as a Croesus in England, Antonin Dvorak's friendly years in the USA, and Joseph Haydn's contented existence at Esterhazy Castle in Hungary, where he flourished in solitude.

Inner exile

Some composers lived in an inner exile, a glorious dream world where their surroundings seemed irrelevant to their creative endeavours. Composers such as Schubert and Shostakovich can serve as examples of this. Not to mention Beethoven, in enforced seclusion.

Quartet to the end of time

However, we can't escape the fact that exile is not pleasurable. The most powerful example of this is without doubt Messiaen's poignant "Quartet for the End of Time", composed in German captivity and premiered outdoors on a freezing winter's day in 1941.

A chamber music festival leading of its kind in Europe

Stavanger Chamber Music Festival is one of Europe's leading festivals, and artistic directors Christian Ihle Hadland and Andreas Brantelid ensure an outstanding artistic quality programme.
