Even though Geiranger is located more than 100 kilometres inland from the coast, it is the second largest cruise port in Norway in respect of cruise ship calls, around 200 in the period end April until end September. In addition Hurtigruten (the Coastal Express) makes daily calls in June until August.
It is a great sight to see the cruise ships on the fjord. This also attracts people from far and near who will watch the ships and experience, at times, the buzzing tourist environment in Geiranger.
The first cruise calls to Geiranger happened in 1869. Among the passengers were a group of Quakers who came ashore to hand out religious pamphlets to the villagers.
Today Stranda Port Authority administrates the ship calls to the ports Geiranger, Hellesylt and Stranda.
