Sola is situated north in the Jæren region, by Hafrsfjord fjord. Here is Norway's oldest civil airport.
The municipality borders to Klepp in the south, Sandnes in the east, and Stavanger in the north. Sola had 25 708 inhabitants per 1 January 2015, in an area that covers 69 km2.
Many traces of settlement have been found in this area, dating back to the stone age, the bronze age, the Viking time as well as more recent times.

Sola beach, SolaSolastranden is a 2,3 km long beach close to the airport. It is one of the most popular beaches in the Stavanger region, and a well used spot for wind- and watersports. Traces of WWII structures can be seen in the southern end of the beach.
Ræge beach, SolaRægestranden beach is a nice little beach next to Sola beach, and is often more quiet than Sola beach. Nice hiking areas surrounded by rocky shores and cliffs. Also a 300-meter long sandy beach.
Ølberg beach, SolaSandy beach southwest of the airport and near Ølberg harbour. Toilets at the camping ground. Kiosk near the harbour. Parking at the kiosk and Ølberg harbour.
Vigdel beach, SolaVigdelstranden beach is ideal for families with small children as it's a shallow beach. Photographers also like to visit the area, as it is varied in terms of landscape; a nice blend of flat and rocky terrain.
Hellestø/Byberg/Skarasanden, SolaIn this area there are several breathtaking beaches with possibility for both swimming and hiking. The annual kite festival is held at the Skarasanden with thousands of attendants, both kids and adults.
