You are here Inspire me Winter in the fjords Attack the city!
The Vikings were smart warriors who were known and revered for their prowess at sea. That meant that they could launch surprise attacks and flee quickly. So why not let yourself be inspired by the Vikings? Be inspired to think like a Viking? Surprise yourself and those you are going to travel with by proposing a voyage of discovery this autumn or winter. Fjord Norway and the cities of Bergen and Stavanger in particular are also well worth a foray outside the high season. A foray here from October to April offers a multitude of scenic experiences, cultural attractions and challenging opportunities.
Get ready for what may be the world’s most beautiful and magnificent surroundings, from their darker and more mysterious side.
The mentality of the people of Bergen is a bit like that of the Vikings – i.e. international. Bergen is a city that has almost always positioned itself to face the rest of the world rather than the rest of Norway. The people like to say ‘I’m not from Norway, I’m from Bergen’. Its international approach is buried deep in the city’s culture, architecture, history and soul.
If you are going to conquer Bergen in autumn, or winter, an umbrella is the best weapon you can bring along. Explore Bergen from under an umbrella. Walk along the narrow alleyways, or the quaint Hanseatic wharfside buildings along Bryggen. Or swing past T-Michael and replace your umbrella with some award-winning, waterproof rain gear, which combines high functionality with tailored craftsmanship. A real Viking knows how to dress. Rain or no rain.
Bergen is not just an interesting city to explore from the street, it also offers an almost unlimited range of music and cultural experiences. From rock concerts on intimate pub stages to masterpieces performed at the Grieg Hall and huge outdoor concerts at Koengen. Local, national and international acts. From Gåte and Kurt Nilsen to Elton John and Uriah Heep. The world is yours for the taking in Bergen, whether you want to conquer its culture or nature. Bergen is situated close to the Norwegian fjords, which are among the world’s most popular attractions. The fjords are furthermore inscribed on UNESCO’s famous World Heritage List, and have been called the best unspoiled travel destination in the world by National Geographic.
To/from the rest of Norway or abroad. It’s easy to get to and from Bergen Airport, Flesland.
If you think like a Viking, and with your stomach, you should turn your gaze and your interest to Stavanger. Norway’s fourth biggest city leads the field in a number of areas. Some people like to call it the ‘oil capital’ of Norway, but for the curious and inquiring, Stavanger’s status as ‘ the food capital’ is much more tempting.
There are lots of culinary landmarks in Stavanger, offering high-quality produce and restaurants that have gained the recognition of national and international gourmets. Stavanger was in fact the first city, outside Oslo, to be awarded a Michelin star. Cold October or cool March. You’ll be hungry whatever the weather. If you want to eat like a Viking king, you should come to Stavanger, according to those in the know. They highlight Stavanger, Jæren and the region as having the best produce in Norway.
Those who make a foray to Stavanger will also be very impressed by the dramatic coastal landscape, the wide open beaches and the scenic contrasts. Some choose to pit themselves against the forces of nature on a surfboard. Others go on a voyage of discovery on the 40-km-long and wild Lysefjord, where the mountains tower like chieftains above large parts of the fjord. A boat trip here is a magnificent experience whatever the time of year. Eexperience impressive mountains, reckless waterfalls and remote farms – in what was once the realm of the Vikings.
To/from the rest of Norway or abroad. It's easy to get to and from Stavanger Airport Sola.
