You are here Inspire me Winter in the fjords Eat like a Viking
The Vikings had a much more varied and exciting diet than we might imagine. They ate varied local produce and their food habits were inspired by their forays to the continent. They ate everything from bread and porridge to the meat of sheep and cattle, and fish and shellfish. They had milk and cheese, and they ate herbs, berries, apples and seaweed. The Vikings also brewed beer and mead. The most prosperous Vikings even had wine, which they procured through trade or raids.
When the Vikings served food, they generally served everything on the table at the same time. Like tapas or a buffet. There were no three or five course meals. Almost everything has changed since the Viking Age, but a real Viking would nod in recognition if he visited Fjord Norway today. The menu is varied, local and international!
If you make a foray to Fjord Norway, Norwegian food will be an important ingredient for a successful experience. Authentic, Norwegian and local food must be tried and tested. Traditional Norwegian dishes with an international twist may well be a revelation for the taste buds.
You will find almost everything in Fjord Norway, which can rightfully call itself a mighty culinary realm. This realm extends from the fjords to the cities, from Ægir BrewPub in Flåm to Lysverket restaurant in Bergen. From local cheese production in the Nærøyfjord to the fantastic variety of produce on offer in the Stavanger region. You can almost navigate by following the food experiences dotted across the region. Stavanger was in fact the first city in Norway, outside Oslo, to be awarded a Michelin star. Renaa restaurant received the well-deserved and long-awaited accolade in 2016. Respect!
Cold winter or wet autumn. Let your taste buds and taste decide the destination. Go Viking. Visit the fjords and Fjord Norway between October and April.
