You are here Places to go Ålesund & Sunnmøre Geiranger

Geiranger

Geiranger is a small village at the very end of the famous Geirangerfjord, included on the prestigious UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. The whole area surrounding this tiny village is spectacular, and visiting Geiranger you can expect dramatic fjord landscape, beautiful nature and cultural experiences.

Here you can go sightseeing on the fjord and see the mighty waterfalls, abandoned farms high up in the mountains, and find spectacular panoramic views from several vantage points. You can do sports all year, go fishing, kayaking, hiking and skiing. After your fjord adventure, you can stay in one of the historic buildings and farms that in modern times are now popular accommodations.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Geiranger and Nærøyfjord landscapes are natural heritage sites and represented on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This area of great beauty encompasses some of the longest, deepest, narrowest and most beautiful fjords in the world. To learn more about the forces of nature that shaped the fjord landscape, visit the Norwegian Fjord Center in Geiranger.

Sightseeing in Geirangerfjord

The best way to experience the Geirangerfjord is by sea, where you can see the abandoned farms and hear the fascinating history of the farmers who once lived there and how they managed to cling on to the steep hillsides. The sightseeing boat will sail right next to the waterfalls The Seven Sisters, the Suitor and the Bridal Veil.

Wondrous views

Visiting Geiranger and the fjords, one must experience the world renowned vantage points in the area. From high up in the steep mountains, you will have fantastic views of the World Heritage nature. The best viewing points are Dalsnibba, Flydalsjuvet and Ørnesvingen.

Accommodation

Staying in the Geiranger area is an adventure of its own. Whether you choose to stay at a hotel, a farm cottage or camping, you will wake up to spectacular nature and unforgettable views.
Read more about accommodation in Geiranger

What to do

There are plenty of activities to choose from, whether you’re in for the adventure of hiking, biking or kayaking, or simply just wish to enjoy the views from a boat trip at the fjord. How about exploring some of the old farms high up in the mountains, or try some of the local food of the area? Stroll around the little village centre and indulge in a visit to the Chocolate Factory, or enjoy a coffee with a view that beats most cafés around the world.

What to see

Famous waterfalls, spectacular vantage points and abandoned farms are some of the highlights when visiting Geiranger and the area. You may also like to visit the charming old church. A waterfall runs through the tiny village from the Norwegian Fjord Center to the bottom where it runs into the fjord, and by walking the Waterfall Path that is built alongside the water you will truly feel close to nature.

Experience Geiranger

Seeing Geiranger and the Geirangerfjord is an amazing experience and the best way to do it is by sea. But why stop there? On the Geirangerfjord & Norway in a nutshell® tour you get to experience the beautiful Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord from the legendary Hurtigruten. The tour also includes a coastal cruise with Hurtigruten and the popular Norway in a nutshell® tour! Read more about this epic trip here.

Travel to Geirangerfjorden and stay overnight in Geiranger during the Geirangerfjord & Norway in a nutshell® tour! The tour can be started in either Oslo, Bergen or Ålesund and is available during the summer months. Find more information and book here.

By car

Geiranger is situated approximately 450 km northwest of Oslo, about a seven to eight hours drive. The drive from Bergen is about five to seven hours, and from Trondheim about five to six hours.
