You are here Places to go Hardangerfjord

Hardangerfjord

Hardangerfjord is close to Bergen and is considered one of the most beautiful areas in Norway. Two national parks, two Norwegian Scenic Routes, fjords, waterfalls and glaciers await you.

History

For decades Hardanger has been one of the most important tourist destinations in Norway. The attractions that drew visitors to Hardanger more than 100 years ago are the same attractions that draw tourists today; the fjords, glaciers, mountains and waterfalls. In 1904, Odda was Norway's most important cruise port, with 88 ships docking in the harbour. The oldest hotels in Hardanger date from the 1700s and at Utne Hotel, which dates from 1722, you can really sense its long history.

Wild adventures

You can take a range of walks and hikes in Hardanger. The most famous is to Trolltunga (the Troll’s tongue), duration 10-12 hours. Perhaps the most beautiful walk is from Kinsarvik and up Husedalen valley, which has four waterfalls. For those wanting other challenges there are glaciers to explore, kayaking, Via Ferrata routes and great cycling routes.

How to get there

If you want to experience the beauty of the Hardangerfjord region at first hand,  why not take advantage of Fjord Tours’ excursions? On their tours you travel by train, boat and bus and decide yourself whether you want an overnight stay during your trip. Start your journey in either Bergen or Oslo and choose between the Hardangerfjord in a nutshell tour or the Hardangerfjord in a nutshell & Rosendal tour. The last tour can be combined with a hiking trip to Trolltunga! The Hardangefjord in a nutshell tour is also available in winter.

You may also join one of Go Fjords' tours from Bergen, Norheimsund or Eidfjord. A visit to Hardangerfjord is simply not complete without a tour on or by the Hardangerfjord, which is the second largest fjord in Norway. Take a fjord cruise and discover the beautiful Vøringsfossen waterfall on the tour "Go Hardangerfjord & Vøringsfossen". Another option is to try summer skiing on the tour "Go Summer Skiing at Folgefonna", or join a guided glacier hike on the tour "Go Glacier Hiking at Folgefonna".

You can see more about how to get here at hardangerfjord.com

Culture and tradition

There are many museums and visitor centres in Hardanger. The most visited is the Hardangervidda Nature Centre in Eidfjord - a great place for the whole family. At the Agatunet farm estate you can get an insight into how people have lived in Hardanger through the ages.

Go Fjords have tours from Bergen and Norheimsund where a visit to the center is part of the tour. Check out their tours here.

Food and drink

Hardanger is Norway's orchard. On the fruit and cider route in Ulvik you can visit three fruit farms, taste the juice and cider and see and learn about its production and history. There are many farm shops in Hardanger, selling local specialities.

You can also go on a cider safari in the Sørfjord. The trip includes a fjord cruise with the hybrid sightseeing vessel "Vision of the Fjords", farm visits, cider tastings and, if you wish, accomodation. Fjord Tours offer a cider safari in Hardanger departing from Bergen. You can read more about this round trip here.

Norwegian Scenic Routes

Hardanger boasts two of the country’s Norwegian Scenic Routes. The Hardanger and Hardangervidda Norwegian Scenic Routes wind through the most magnificent landscapes in Norway. In May and June you can witness spring’s most beautiful sight – the fruit trees blossoming in Hardanger.

Adventures awaiting you in Hardanger

Hike to Trolltunga (the Troll’s tongue): Trolltunga is one of the Norway’s most spectacular rock formations. The round-trip takes 10-12 hours with an elevation of around 900 meters. You must be physically fit and well-equipped for a hike in the mountains. Usually the season lasts from mid June until mid September. A map and further information can be found at the tourist information centre in Odda. Read more about Trolltunga

Vøringsfossen: The Vøringsfossen Waterfall has a free fall of 145 metres and a total fall of 182 metres, and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Norway.

Explore the Folgefonna Glacier: Since 1994, Folgefonni Breførarlag has been offering guided tours on the Folgefonna glacier in Jondal. Jondal is about 2.5 hours from Bergen. The glacier walks are suitable for all ages (8-80 years old) and tours are tailored to meet the needs of the participants. Read more about exploring Folgefonna glacier

Norwegian Nature Center: A visitor centre for Norwegian nature, climate and environment. With its amazing panoramic movies, excellent interactive exhibitions and an award-winning café, the centre is a great destination for the whole family. Read more about Norwegian Nature Center

Agatunet: At Agatunet you can experience a traditional farm estate, typical in western Norway until the late 1800's. At the estate there are perfect examples of the region’s architecture, ranging from the Middle Ages until the present day. Aga was a very large farm estate and the Court of Appeals Lodge was built around 1250. There’s a cosy café, exhibitions and guided tours throughout the summer. Read more about Agatunet

Via Ferrata: Via Ferrata is a prepared climbing route that you can navigate with a guide, without the need for any previous climbing experience. There are two Via Ferrata routes in Hardanger, one in Tyssedal and one that takes you to Trolltunga. Trolltunga Active organises the climbing tours. Read more about Via Ferrata
