You are here Places to go Destination Northwest

Destination Northwest

The coastal towns of Molde and Kristiansund, fjords, mountains, picturesque villages, island communities, opera, jazz and roses. Experience the world’s most beautiful car journey: the Atlantic Road and the Trollstigen Road. Northwest is the perfect base for trips to some of Fjord Norway’s most famous attractions. And the secret escapes!

The coastal towns of Molde and Kristiansund

Kristiansund is one of Norway’s most distinctive towns with its colourful post-war architecture. The town became known for their clipfish production as early as in 1737, but in modern times petroleum and gas have become the leading industries. Discover more about the history of clipfish at the Norwegian Clipfish Museum in Kristiansund.  The town is located in a beautiful setting on four islands connected by bridges at the ocean’s edge. Take a trip on the Sundbåten boat, the world’s oldest mode of public transport still in operation. Kristiansund is also known as the city of opera. The Opera in Kristiansund became established in the early 1900s, and there is a opera festival taking place every year in February.

In the late 1800's, Molde was among the foremost fjord tourist destinations in Norway, and the town was one of the main attractions when the first passenger cruise ship visited the country in 1882. The Bygata street at the Romsdal Museum recreates the atmosphere of this area before the great fire in 1916. Parts of the town are characterised by simple, clean and functional post-war architecture. Do not miss the view from the Varden viewpoint, with its 222 partially snow-clad mountain peaks, the Molde panorama. Molde is known for its annual Molde International Jazz Festival in July and is the oldest European jazz festival in continuous operation since 1961.

Norwegian Scenic Routes – the Atlantic Road and Trollstigen Road

The Atlantic Road, from Bud to Kårvåg, has received numerous accolades, such as Norway’s best bike ride, the world's most beautiful road trip, and was even voted Norway's construction of the century. There are several designated parking areas along the road and it even has its own fishing bridges where you can throw your line into the ocean from the road. The stretch which contains the bridges is 9 km long, and the most scenic bridge is the Storseisundet bridge.

Read more about the Atlantic Road

The Norwegian mountaineering capital Åndalsnes is beautifully situated between the Romsdal Alps, where you can also experience Norway’s most visited tourist road - Trollstigen. Through the steep mountain terrain the road twists and turns through 11 hairpin bends as it climbs up to Stigrøra (858 metres above sea level) and carries you across the Stigfossen waterfall over an impressive natural stone bridge.

Secret escapes in Northwest

The lighthouse islands Ona, Grip and Veiholmen

Out to sea west of Molde you will find a cluster of islands, of which Ona lighthouse is the most famous attraction. Ona is Norway’s southernmost functioning fishing village, with around 20-25 permanent residents. Do not miss a trip to the isle of Grip - the tiny island with a big history just outside of Kristiansund. This was once the smallest municipality in Norway and is now only inhabited in the summer. The picturesque buildings and the 500 year old stave church stand close together like a small town. The fishing village of Veiholmen is located towards the northernmost tip of Smøla, and is linked to the main island by a road that is an adventure in itself.

Mardalsfossen and Aursjøveien road

You will find Mardalsfossen, the world’s fourth highest waterfall, at the end of Eikesdalsvatnet lake. The waterfall is particularly impressive from 20th June to 20th August each year, when water is released by a hydroelectricity company. Possibly Norway's most spectacular mountain road, Aursjøvegen ascends from Sunndalsøra and up the narrow Litldalen valley with the wild river gushing below. The road gradually winds its way up to the plateau and down to Eikesdalen.

Active holiday offers

Come and try the hiking areas in Trollheimen and Sunndalsfjella National Park. Take the mountain bus to Vengedalen and hike up the beautiful Romsdalseggen, a 7-8 hour hiking trip with views of the Trollveggen, Romsdalshorn and Vengetindene (the Venge peaks). The hiking route Fjord Route, starts directly at the airport in Kristiansund.  Let an experienced guide take you climbing, kayaking, skiing or hiking. You will never regret it!

Getting here and around

The Northwest region is situated about 500 km from Oslo and 450 km from Bergen. You can travel by train from Oslo or Trondheim, to Oppdal or to Dombås and then with the spectacular Rauma Railway to Åndalsnes. In addition, the famed Hurtigruten - both north-and southbound - arrive in Molde and Kristiansund every single day of the year. There are airports in both Kristiansund and Molde, with daily flights from/to the major cities in Norway.  There are buses that runs frequently on the main routes in the region, but we recommend to have your own car, to have more freedom to go to the hidden treasures in our destination.
