This incredible biking adventure combines magnificent fjords, charming villages and impressive mountains. The bike route starts from the mountain town of Voss and heads north towards the Sognefjord and Sunnfjord before circling back to Bergen via express boat. The Bergen Railway provides an easy connection to Voss from Oslo or Bergen, making it possible to choose either one as your base. As a bonus you will experience one of Norway’s most scenic train journeys. Our tour suggestion contains three overnight stays and covers about 100km per day with climbing legs of 1500-2000m, a rewarding challenge for experienced cyclists. You can easily customize the tour to your preferences and fitness level, with the possibility of renting e-bikes in Voss. It is also possible to hire a guide and luggage transport as well as scheduling more overnight stays. An extra night or two gives you the chance to explore hidden gems and hiking trails in the Sognefjord and Sunnfjord area. Take a break from biking and experience untouched nature with sea kayaking or glacier walking.
Bergen – Voss – Vikafjell – Vik – Vangsnes – Dragsvik – Balestrand, 97 km, elevation gain 1590 m., 1 ferry

The Majestic Fjord Tour starts off with a ride past charming farmhouses and roaring waterfalls before you start the epic climb up the hairpin bends to Vikafjellet mountain. After completing the first challenging climb of the tour you can look forward to an easy ride down the hills to the charming fjord village Vik. If you have time, do stop by the ancient Hopperstad stave church or try the local specialty “gammalost” in town. A ferry service from nearby Vangsnes will take you across the Sognefjord to Dragsvik, and we highly recommend enjoying the view from the deck. From Dragsvik on the northern bank follow the Esefjord to Balestrand. Check in at the romantic Kviknes Hotel for a hearty buffet meal and a good night’s rest in beautiful surroundings. Pro tip: make an early booking in order to secure one of the historic rooms with a fjord view.
Balestrand – Gaular – Rørvikfjellet – Førde, 105 km, elevation gain 1690 m.

First up is a short detour to Dragsvik before leaving the fjord behind and heading up the steep hills of Gaularfjellet mountain (Norwegian Scenic Route). We hope you got a good rest from yesterday’s leg up Vikafjellet before taking on the serpentine road to the viewpoint Utsikten, aka “The View”. As the name suggests, Utsikten is the perfect place to rest up after the tough climb and enjoy a magnificent view of mountains and the steep hill you just conquered. Once you are ready to continue, be sure to pace yourself on the mountain road down to Viksdalen. We don’t mind being slowed down by the many cattle grids, however, since impressive waterfalls pop up every few kilometers. Today’s last challenge is Rørvikfjellet mountain. This short but tough climb lies between you and the spa department at Scandic Sunnfjord Hotel & Spa in Førde or a relaxing stay at Thon Hotel Førde.
Førde – Naustdal – Stongfjorden – Askvoll – Bergen (express boat Askvoll-Bergen), 101 km, elevation gain 1950 m., 1 ferry

The last leg of our tour is a “best of” Western Norway. From fjords and deep valleys in Førde and Naustdal, the road leads to a beautiful coastline studded with islands. Narrow gravel roads and rolling hills are characteristic of this rural region, and if you are lucky you may spot a sea eagle scouting for prey in Stongfjorden. The serene landscape is just as beautiful in sunlight as in rain or behind a misty veil. If you are making good time, we recommend treating yourself to a meal in Askvoll before boarding the express boat back to Bryggen in Bergen.
The local tourist offices can give you good and useful information.
