Ferry, boat, bus or train … try traveling like the locals! Vacationers seek out eco-friendly, sustainable travel these days, and there’s no better, greener way to get around Fjord Norway than by public transport. Take advantage of our scenic region’s efficient, elaborate network of road, rail and waterway connections to make the most of your visit. It’s more affordable and infinitely more authentic! Commute with us and get to know our communities.
Luckily for our guests, Travel like the locals can help. The service has packaged the most popular itineraries in Fjord Norway using sustainable mass transit options and made them bookable online. There are no guides or tour leaders. You simply travel on your own, like a real local, via bus, boat and ferry. You can see all the tours available below. From Stavanger in the south to Kristiansund up north. Exploring our coasts, fjords, mountains, glaciers, towns and farms from a choice of 15 departure regions is as easy as hitting the “Book Now” button at tltl.no.
Feel like a hike? Travel like the locals by bus to get to the starting points for walks in the historical Aurlandsdalen valley. To get completely dazed by the beauty of the largest glacier in continental Europe, Jostedalsbreen, travelers can arrive comfortably and conveniently by the “Glacier bus” from Sogndal to the Nigardsbreen, one of Jostedalsbreen's arms. Something coastal is more to your liking? Combine boats, buses and ferries from Ålesund or Molde for trips out to the island fishing village of Ona, the “bird island” of Runde or Alnes lighthouse. In Stavanger, board a beautiful express-boat fjord safari to Sand or Sauda, or island hop in the very hikeable Ryfylke archipelago.
From Haugesund, set out by bus for a hike through rolling fjord farmland to towering Mount Himakånå. In Nordfjord, leave beautiful Stryn behind, bound for the stunning village of Loen. Hop on the Loen Skylift to soar 1,011 meters in 5 minutes. If you’ve got 5 hours, dare to via ferrata climb your way up. Top off the day with a valley bike ride, fjord canoe or kayak in picturesque Lodalen valley. Take the bus back to Stryn to mull over your adventures while enjoying a cup of coffee in one of the charming small cafes.
So, you’re all set. All aboard and off you go! Just be sure to catch and make your connections! En route, you’re sure to commute, and maybe even commune, with the locals. You may notice that we Norwegians like to sit rather far apart on public transport — perhaps it’s that we’re just so used to all this wide-open space — but don’t get us wrong. Reach out to say hi or ask for help and you’ll find we’re in fact a rather friendly lot. Smile or swap a story or two, and in no time at all, you’ll be traveling like a local.
