You are here Things to do Biking Fly and Bike with Widerøe

Fly and Bike with Widerøe

Fly and Bike is a new concept from Widerøe airlines allowing you to explore fjords, mountains and islands by bike. In the summer months, you can rent a bike from the airports in Førde, Florø, Sandane and Sogndal, and the whole year round from Stavanger. By using the booking at wideroe.no, and selecting pick-up / drop-off at the airport, the bike will be waiting for you on arrival. You don´t need to worry about transport to and from the airport either – you deliver the bike in the same spot. After securing your flight ticket through the regular Widerøe booking site, all that is left to do is to pack your bag for an epic bike holiday in Fjord Norway!

Fjord Norway has an incredibly diverse landscape, perfect for an active bike holiday of conquering hilltops, or cruising in a relaxing pace past green fields and sandy beaches. Do keep in mind that traffic can be heavy along the main roads, even in rural areas, where imposing mountains and hills make for narrow stretches and an infinite number of tunnels. Mountain roads lead to incredible views at the top, before the easy part of rolling down the hillside to quiet valleys and fjord villages. A ferry ride can take you across a mighty fjord or over to island communities with quiet roads to explore. In the southern part of the region the North Sea Cycle Route leads from one charming town to the next along the coastline, where lighthouses and farms dot the landscape. Although the many mountain passes, tunnels and ferries may seem daunting if you want to explore the large region, the Fly and Bike offer is a perfect combination with the Explore Norway ticket from July 1st to August 31st. Valid for a two-week period, this offer gives you unlimited travel within the geographical zone that you choose, and allows you to hop between airports to see as much as possible.

Fly and Bike is available from these airports in Fjord Norway

Florø

In Florø it is almost impossible to escape the ocean view. Norway´s westernmost town has a compact center ideal for biking and is surrounded by an archipelago of big and small islands.  The idyllic little communities at Svanøy, Askrova and Hovden are connected to the town by local ferry services and are a biker´s paradise, with little traffic and magnificent scenery. The old road over the Ramsdalsheia plateau is a less relaxing experience, but the view at the top is well worth the hard work you put in to get there, traversing many narrow bends up the hillside.

Førde

The town center of Førde lies approximately 13km from Bringeland airport, with many valleys branching off and waiting to be explored. The road lining the south bank of the long-stretched Jølstravatnet lake is quieter than the E39 highway along the northern bank and leads the way to one of our cultural treasures. Astruptunet museum and gallery lies at the old farmstead where painter Nikolai Astrup was inspired by nature in his romantic and vibrant masterpieces. Stop by Sunnfjord Museum on your way there, an impressive collection of buildings that take you back to the daily life of a farming family centuries ago. A longer and more challenging route leads over the the Norwegian Scenic Route Gaularfjellet, a mountain pass where you will see magnificent waterfalls and a stunning viewpoint before reaching the steep hairpin bends down to Balestrand. In the opposite direction from the airport towards Bygstad lies a luxurious alternative, where the owners of Villa Åmot have turned the farm into a splendid getaway.

Sandane

At Sandane nearly everything is within biking distance, including the airport. Flying to Anda is an incredible experience as the landing strip is located on a peninsula overlooking the fjord, with magnificent views. Anda is located 10 km from the village center, and from there a network of trails and gravel road are suited for different levels. For a different route, follow the asphalt road at your own pace past farms and pastures along the fjord.

Sogndal

The view as you land at Haukåsen airport in Sogndal offers a taste of what is to come - mountains, fjords and forests. Located in the innermost reaches of the mighty Sognefjord, Sogndal is a hub for active people. Do mind the traffic as this is also a popular area for caravan tourism and you may encounter large vehicles on narrow and twisty roads. We recommend taking the shuttle bus from the airport to avoid the heavy traffic between Kaupanger and Sogndal before you start your bike adventure. Head towards Fimreite, where the country road through a serene landscape is perfect for biking. The idyllic village of Solvorn has a ferry service crossing the Lustrafjord to Urnes, one of the oldest and most beautiful stave churches in existence. From the church, a narrow but lightly trafficked road follows the banks of the fjord in a romantic backdrop towards Skjolden, which marks the entry to the mighty Jotunheimen mountains. An alternative route follows the road along the north side of the Sognefjord to fruit farms and charming villages such as Leikanger and Balestrand.

Stavanger

The bustling city of Stavanger offers Fly and Bike throughout the whole year, allowing travelers to explore the different seasons and a multitude of colors and sights. Pedal through the famous Øvre Holmegate where brightly painted facades light up the street and onwards to the pristine, white wooden houses of Old Stavanger, before heading to the eastern side of town. The former working-class neighborhood has turned into a vibrant and up-and-coming scene where local vendors, cafes and pubs have revitalized the streets. South of town, the North Sea Cycle Route leads to sandy beaches at Jæren, green pastures and dramatic fjords. The landscape offers a comfortable bike journey all-year round without steep inclines, and you can add a stretch on the Sørlandsbanen railway to cover more ground.
