You are here Things to do Culture & Heritage Artisans at work - Economusée
An Économusée is almost as a living museum, where you can experience the craft in practice, and you can of course buy the products on the spot. An Économusée is not a museum in the ordinary sense, but a living craft business where our cultural heritage lives and develops. In addition to the production and sale of traditional craft products, there is also interesting information and exhibitions of the craft traditions and the company's history.
Today, there are 13 Économusée in Fjord Norway, and several of them offer guided tours. You can experience how, for example, an Oselvar wooden boat is built (in exactly the same way as many hundreds of years ago), how wool turns into yarn at Hillesvåg Ullvarefabrikk or or how the famous Aurlandskoen shoe is made.
The idea of opening up workshops for guests was born in Quebec in Canada in 1992, and you can find artisans at work in places such as Greenland, Iceland, Ireland and the Faroe Islands - it all seems quite exotic, but our artisans are down to earth and very welcoming.
