Take the funicular railway to Mount Fløyen and see all of Bergen in just 6 minutes.
The funicular railway is one of Norway's most famous attractions. The trip starts from the city centre, just 150 metres from the Fish Market and Bryggen. The exiting trip up to the mountain is a magnificent experience in itself.
From Mount Fløyen, approx. 320 metres above sea level, you can enjoy the beautiful view, study the cityscape in detail and the seaward approaches and fjords surrounding Bergen. At Fløyen there is also a restaurant, cafeteria, souvenir shop and play area.
Fløibanen funicular (the Fløibanen train):
The Fløibanen line is 844 m (2,769 ft) long, covers a height difference of 302 m (991 ft), and carries over 1,8 million passengers a year. The line is single track with a central passing loop and was build in 1918. The track is has a gradient that varies between 15 and 26 degrees. There are two cars, each of which can carry 100 passengers and the cars are individually named and painted, with Blåmann in blue and Rødhette in red. (Source: Wikipedia) The track has 6 stops and are frequently used by locals living up on the mountain side as well as two kindergardens on the mountain. During the summer and rush hours only certain departures will stop at all stops.
You can buy your tickets at the Tourist Information in Bergen or at the ticket office at Fløibanen bottom station.
The Fløibanen funicular runs daily from early morning until 11 p.m. during the the year. (With e few exceptions, see opening hours below). The funicular has easy access for prams/pushchairs and wheelchairs.
The Funicular takes you to a fantastic area of beautiful natural surroundings with innumerable opportunities for walking and hiking. From Mount Fløyen there are walks on gravel roads and paths to fantastic viewpoints where you can enjoy views of the fjord, mountains and the city below. Check out 10 inspiring walk for the whole family here.
You can also walk from Mount Fløyen to Mount Ulriken. This hike is called Vidden and is one of Bergens most popular mountain hikes. You can walk in either direction, but a lot of people prefer to start at Ulriken and finish at Fløyen which is right in the city center. The hike takes approximately 5 hours and you can read more about the Vidden hike here.
