Visiting the Herdla Museum you will become familiar with both the small island of Herdla and the archipelago west of Bergen. Just 45 km from the city this is the place for a scenic daytrip. The museum gives an insight into the island's dramatic war history and you will understand why Herdla island has beautiful beaches and a very rich bird life.
Yellow- 16 - from fighter aircraft to cultural memorial
On the 15th of December 1943, the German fighter Yellow-16 took off from the airbase at Herdla. After 64 years on the seabed the aircraft was raised and is now the main attraction in our war exhibition.
Art, nature and environment
In the main building you can visit temporary exhibitions. Some of them will focus on the nature and history of Herdla, others might surprise you.
Herdla torpedo battery Up until few years ago, the torpedo battery was a top-secret defense facility. Today the fully equipped battery is protected as cultural heritage. Joining one of the guided tours you can experience the times of the Cold War. The tour takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
The bird sanctuary at Herdla is the most important in the Hordaland region. At the museum you will get information about the birdlife and what precautions you should take when visiting the sanctuary. When booked in advance we can also organize bird-trips for groups.
Good to know
Free admittance for children. The museum has a Cafeteria with hot/cold beverages, cakes and snacks.The open and easily accessible landscape makes Herdla a perfect destination for various outings for everyone.Bus service several times a day (Bus 499 from the Busstation).
