Opening Times

* Trollstigen is closed during the winter season. The road normally opens May/June depending on the weather and snow conditions.

About

Trollstigen, the road 63, is a part of the Norwegian Scenic Route; Geiranger - Trollstigen. Driving Trollstigen is a dramatic and exciting experience. The road twists through 11 hairpin bends as it climbs up to Stigrøra (858 metres above sea level). Some places it's cut into the mountain; and some parts are built on top of stone walls. An impressive bridge in natural stone carries it across the Stigfossen waterfall. The road is a result of hard work and an impressive piece of engineering work dated 100 years back in time. His Majesty King Haakon VII opened the road in the summer of 1936.

At top of Trollstigen there are viewpoints and steel walkways which allow you to get close to the dramatic mountains and waterfalls. The service building houses a café with panoramic windows, souvenirshop and toilets. The Trollstigen Plateau and the two spectacular viewpoints that provide full overview of the countryside, is designed by Reiulf Ramstad Architects. Everything is built in steel and glass and provides good protection against rough weather. The structure is designed so that it blends in with the surroundings, some parts are carved into the rock, while other parts are built on stone walls.

The road is closed in the winter and normally opens in late May or early June.

Sightseeing in Trollstigen
There are different ways to access Trollstigen. Trollstigen opens normally in May, and it closes in late Autumn, depending on the weather and driving conditions. You can use your own vehicle Vehicles with a maximum length of 13,1 metres are allowed to drive in Trollstigen. If you don't have your own car it is possible to rent a car in Åndalsnes town. ts.

Hiking in Trollstigen
Trollstigen is a great starting point for some of the greatest hikes in Romsdalen, summer and spring. Bispevatnet  is an easy hike to a small glacial lake above Trollstigen. (1 hour /r). Kløvstien from the foot of Trollstigen and up to Trollstigen plateau is a steep hike in rugh terrain through a uniqe, dramatic landscape. 2 - 3 hours one way. Stabbeskaret to the edge of Trollveggen - Challenging hike through boulders and scree. But it is worth the struggle. What a fantastic expereince to look down the vertical mountain face at the edge of Trollveggen! However, for your own safety it is recommended to join a guided hike. 3 - 4 hours one way. Mannen - Challenging, but easier terrain than the path to Stabbeskaret. 3 - 4 hours one way.
