Ski touring

The mountains of Fjord Norway are perfect for ski touring and backcountry skiing. There are an immense number of peaks to choose from, suitable for the experienced skier or for the beginner. Please see list of trips/tours available below.

Exploring majestic landscapes, trekking through unbroken snow, breathing in fresh mountain air. For the experienced skier, ski touring in Fjord Norway is exceptional. The mountains in the region are perfect for ski touring and freeride skiing. In fact, they're known as one of the best destinations not just in Norway, but all of Europe.

Ascending mountains on alpine or telemark skis has become an increasingly popular activity for Norwegian skiers. The world's biggest Alpine Ski Touring Festival is held every year in early May, at Turtagrø Hotel l in the mountains of Hurrungane near the inner Sognefjord. The area has been a popular meeting place for mountaineers since the late 1800s.

Closer to the coast, the steep Sunnmøre Alps surround the Hjørundfjord and offer the exciting opportunity to ski from 1500m above sea level to the fjord in just one run, if the snow conditions allow. The Alps are just an hour's drive from the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund, so why not combine your ski tour with a stay in one of Norway's most charming towns?

Planning your ski tour

Ski touring in Fjord Norway is not just for expert skiers, but it does demand being in good physical shape and that you have a reasonable level of skiing skill.

Going freeride skiing alone, without a guide, also demands knowledge about the risk of avalanche, first-aid and navigation. If you are exploring an area for the first time, we strongly recommend that you ask a local guide to come with you. There are numerous certified guides in the area. A guide can also tailor the trip according to your wishes and skills. Please see a list of certified guides and tours below.

Touring equipment

You can either bring your own equipment or everything you need. As a minimum, you'll need the following:
  • Alpine skis with walking mode – big skis in the winter and smaller, more lightweight ones in spring and summer
  • Good lightweight boots with walking mode
  • Skins for the skis and adjustable poles
  • A small backpack (30L) with avalanche beacon, shovel and search probe
  • Good warm clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen and of course a camera

While renting equipment is easy, we do recommend bringing your own shoes. Good, comfortable shoes are the key to a great skiing experience in Fjord Norway.

The organizing and regulation of mountain guiding in Norway

Norwegians have long-standing traditions of outdoor activities and non-regulated use of nature. There is a relatively strong layman’s tradition, and no formal qualification is mandatory for guiding in the fields of climbing and ski touring. This leaves mountain guiding as a distinctly less regulated field than in countries such as France and Switzerland, for instance.

In Norway, there are many vocational guides who lack the IFMGA qualification but bring clients safely to summits on different types of outdoor adventures, all year round. At the same time, there will always be a few examples of individuals or companies that do not operate on the same level, according to international standard in terms of skills, quality and safety. In conclusion, it is up to the tourists to choose a guide for their outdoor adventure, and to assess whether quality and safety are taken care of. Choosing a tour or experience marked with the IFMGA certification is a guarantee that your mountain guide has been through a high level of training and assessment on rock climbing, ice climbing, general mountaineering and ski mountaineering.
