When the ski centres in lower-lying areas close their lifts in spring, the ski lifts on the glaciers open for the season.
Skiing in summer is a unique experience. The weather is warm and you can revel in terrific soft snow – while enjoying fantastic views of the green fjord landscape. The summer ski centres put a lot of effort into creating good terrain parks, and there are good overnight accommodation facilities just a short drive away.
Fonna is one of Europe’s top summer ski centres, located 1,200 metres above sea level near Jondal in Hardanger. The centre has ski slopes for the whole family, a varied freestyle park and cross-country tracks on the glacier. The views of the glacier, the Hardangerfjord and the North Sea from the top, at 1,470 metres above sea level, are spectacular. If you’re lucky, you might even meet one of the skiers on Norway’s national team who come to train at the centre.
The summer season at Fonna normally lasts from May until September, and the centre is open every day. The new visitor centre opened in 2020, with a new restaurant that serves dishes based on local ingredients, a ski-hire shop and toilets.
Strynefjellet is home to Stryn summer ski centre. The centre is situated on the Tystigbreen glacier, and has a chair lift that takes you up to the glacier basin, where visitors can engage in freeriding at their own risk. There are also plans to build a terrain park. The centre has a café and ski-hire shop.
Sognefjellet is home to Sognefjellet summer ski centre, where there are prepared cross-country tracks from around mid-May to July/August. The tracks run along the RV 55 road, beside Sognefjellshytta cabin, Fanaråkbreen glacier and Prestesteinsvatnet lake. The centre is situated on the highest mountain pass in Northern Europe, at 1,400 metres above sea level.
The local tourist offices can give you good and useful information.
