About

Travel back in time with the Old Voss Steam Railway Museum this summer. Experience first-hand the golden age of rail travel onboard heritage teak coaches from the 20s and 30s, pulled by our beautifully restored ten-wheeler steam locomotive from 1913. Departure is every Sunday from mid-June to mid-September, steaming between Garnes station and Midttun station outside Bergen.

The line opened in 1883 and in the beginning, it served as a narrow gauge line between Bergen and Voss. It was upgraded to standard gauge with the completion of Bergensbanen to Oslo. It served until 1964 when the new Ulriken tunnel opened, resulted in the closure of the line. Along the line, you can witness the line’s engineering and architectural heritage and soak in the beauty of the nature that the line passes.

Get ready for a departure back in time to the golden age of rail travel. The smell of burnt coal, teak varnish and steam wafting through the air, the conductor in his pressed uniform sounding his whistle and signalling the driver a green flag, the doors slamming shut and the deep hoot of the steam engine letting everybody know she is ready to depart, letting out massive clouds of steam as she is off towards the horizon. Take a seat, relax and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere onboard our train and the picturesque landscape rolling by your window. A truly unique not-to-be-missed experience.

What’s on

The Old Voss Steam Railway Museum offer unique experiences throughout the summer. Together with your train ride you can on select dates, participate in a wide variety of events. You can be sure to find something you like, either if you are travelling with your family, your partner or by yourself.

Experience Bergen Heritage Tour this summer. A unique and exciting tour of Bergen’s most stunning scenery, and a journey back in time to the golden age of travel! See Bergen’s magnificent fjords onboard the steam ship Stord I, ride behind a steam engine and witness engineering heritage and picturesque landscapes, and travel in style onboard classic heritage buses.

Enjoy a Sunday lunch onboard our train in our classing dining car from 1937. The car has been lovingly restored by volunteers and is the last dining car still in regular traffic in Norway. Experience a bygone era, with pressed tablecloths, white porcelain, waiters and great service. Bring your family or friends for lunch, have a romantic lunch for two or just by yourself. With us, you will find a nice atmosphere and good dining experiences in the dining car suiting every occasion.

We offer a lot of fun for the whole family during the summer. It is exciting for the children to see the big steam engine, with all its bells, whistles, huffing and puffing. If you ask the driver, maybe you will get to see the inside of the cab? Of select dates, we have partnered the company of actors “Tidsreiser” to offer exciting detective mysteries for the childen. Can you help the detective to solve the mystery and find the thief?

At the end of the season, we bring out all the bells and whistles for our grand finale – our “Stordriftsdag”. This day a special ticket lets you travel as much as you like the whole day, with both steam and diesel engines. You can have lunch in our classic dining car, witness train crossings done the old-fashioned way with flag signalling and stations masters, many volunteers in action and plenty of fun.

Took the Sunday Trip including the oldtimer bus, steam railway and steam boat. The best part of the trip was the steam boat. The bus and railway were not that special. Read full review

    Map & Directions

    Map Link

    Road Directions

How to reach the different stations?

Our end of the line stations are Garnes and Midttun.

We recommend for easiest access to use Arna old station as your starting point for your trip. The station is not manned, but all trains stop here. The address for the station is Ådnavegen 26. It is within walking distance of the new train station in Arna. Use NSB local service from Bergen to the new station and expect a walking time of 10 to 15 minutes to Arna old station. Be aware that there is no signs giving directions, but this map will show the correct walking route: https://goo.gl/maps/wcQzke1cQ842

If you wish to use Garnes station as your starting point, the address is Tunesveien 8. You can use Skyss bus service 92, 95, 200 and 201, which corresponds, with local train service from Arna new station. Use bus stop Garnes VGS Garnesstølen.

Midttun station is located at Ulsmågveien 1. Use Bybanen to Nesttun. From here use bus number 70, 80 or 90 to bus stop “Midtun”.
