The Atlantic Road has been voted Norway’s best cycle route several times by various worldwide associations. The 80 km stretch of road between Kristiansund and Bud is a highlight for cyclists, twisting along a string of islands connected by seven bridges.
About the Route
- The cycle route between Kristiansund/Averøy and Bud is around 80 km in total, with possibilities to shorten or extend the route as you please.
- The Atlantic Road is a part of the National bicycle route nr 1, from Kristiansund to Ålesund (200 km).
- The trip is best suited for adults as there is heavy traffic along the Atlantic Road.
- The trip is considered easy and without steep inclines.
Travel Advice
- Take your car or go by bus through the 6 Km long Atlantic Road Tunnel from Kristiansund to Averøy. More info about public transport through the Atlantic Ocean Tunnel (pdf)
- When crossing Averøya, it is recommended to ride along the inside of the beautiful island. There is less traffic here, great cycling terrain and idyllic, quiet surroundings.
- At Kårvåg, where the bridge starts, we recommend a stop for refreshments at the café Bjartmars Favorittkro.
- Take a detour to the fishing village Håholmen, daily boat departures to the island every hour on the hour during high season.
- Just after the iconic Storseisund bridge, you will come across another bridge where there are great fishing spots.
- Follow the trails along the coast from Farstad to Nordneset and in the areas around Bud, and you will be rewarded with a magnificent view towards the wild Hustadvika bay.
- Visit Ergan Coastal Fort and the Coastal Culture Centre at Bud and learn more about how World War II affected the community. Also located at Bud is the Tourist Information Office.
Gear and Equipment
- Bring your own bicycle or rent one (there are bike rentals in Molde and Sveggvika (Averøy)).
- Check the weather before your trip and bring extra clothing to be prepared for changes in the weather.
- Wear multiple layers of clothes in order to adjust to temperature and movement.
