The hiking trip to Trolltunga in Hardanger is both challenging and exciting, and an unforgettable experience. You get rewarded by a fantastic view after a tough hike through high-mountain terrain up to 1180 m..a.s.l. From the main trailhead at the parking lot P2 in Skjeggedal the round-trip hike is 28 km with an ascent of approx. 800 m. Estimated hiking time is 8.12 hours. If you start at P3 Mågelitopp, the hike is 20 km with an ascent of 320 m. Estimated hiking time is 7.10 hours. You need to be in good physical shape, be well equipped and start early in the morning. We recommend that you have at least two days at your disposal to increase the chances of nice weather. Do not go hiking in case of strong wind, heavy rain or fog. Check the weather forecast! Season: June-September: Guided hikes are recommended. Experienced hikers can go on their own- Start hiking before 8 AM (in June/July you can start a little later). October-May: guided hikes only.
Grade: Black. This is a demanding hiking trip for experienced hikers.
There is a T-marked sign for the trail (capital letter "T" is the national standard in Norway for marking hiking trails) from the parking area in Skjeggedal that leads to Trolltunga. There are also information signs along the hike that display the distance covered and remaining distance to the top.
The hike starts with a steep climb from the car park in Skjeggedal to Måglitopp. The path continues towards a more moderate climb and then the hike is relatively flat towards Trolltunga, with just a few moderate climbs.
The hike is approximately 28 km return, duration ten to twelve hours total (from the P2 parking lot).

Use of drones is not permitted.
From June 1st to September 30th, there is a Mountain Guard day and night at Trolltunga. There are two rescue cabins placed on the way to Trolltunga. These are for emergencies only and are not intended for overnight stays.
Preserver the Norwegian nature! Bring back all your garbage (including toilet paper) and discard it in the rubbish bins at the parking lot. Please be advised that there are no public toilets along the hiking trails. We urge you to use the toilets at the parking lots in Skjeggedal or Tyssedal before starting your long hike up to Trolltunga.
For everyone’s safety, when you’re hiking, please keep your toilet visits well away from the streams and lakes, and downhill from the trails.
Wear solid hiking boots (leave your sneakers behind!), and be prepared for changing weather. Check the weather forecast in advance. It can be nice and sunny at the parking lot, but cold and rainy at the top.
Ensure you bring wind and water proof clothes. Wear warm, multiple layers of clothes, a hat and gloves. Be aware that temperatures can get low, even in summer. Wool inner layer is highly recommended.
Ensure you have plenty to eat, drink, a map and a compass.
