Zum Hauptinhalt

Himmelens krystall is a rich, moving and beautifully crafted story of an entire life. The book presents a quiet portrait of Tomas, a postman living around the year 1900, who experiences a life marked by solitude, but also by profound richness.

In March, Gaute Heivoll was awarded the Norwegian Readers’ Novel Prize (Lytternes romanpris) for this novel.

This is the first volume in a major new literary project: a series of portraits of lonely individuals in the 20th century, with connections to Agder and, later, to places across Europe and the United States. The book highlights the value and significance found in lives that may appear ordinary or lonely from the outside, yet contain great depth and meaning.

This has become Heivoll’s distinctive method: beginning with a real event or person and allowing the imagination to expand the story from there. The second volume in the series will be published in mid-August and is titled Vinden gjennom oss.

The conversation will be hosted by literary scholar Brita Strand Rangnes from the University of Stavanger.
